2026 ATOD TAP EXAMS

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Academy of Dance Victoria students study the internationally recognised Australian Teachers of
Dancing (ATOD) Syllabus for their Tap levels.
​
The exams are a great learning tool that allow students to work towards a goal and enjoy the
achievement of their result. All students receive a certificate, medal and feedback sheet from an
external examiner from ATOD. The students have been working very hard on their exam work and
their teachers are very pleased with their progress.

What if I can’t attend the exam?
It is assumed that your dancer will be taking part in the exams. If your child will not be participating
in the exams, please email Kylie Fenelon at studiomanager@academyofdance.biz no later than
1st June otherwise exam charges will still apply.

Preposed Exam Date: Sunday 2nd August

Does my child get to practice at the studio prior to the exam?
Yes! We are running a compulsory exam practice for each class to practice doing their work under
exam conditions at Academy of Dance Victoria’s studios

What are the Exam costs?
The below are 2025 fees to use as a guide

What does my child need to wear for the exam?
Every student needs to be in the correct uniform. This can be purchased through our online store. No
crossovers, jumpers or non uniform items are allowed to be worn in the exam. The room will be
heated.
​How do they need to wear their hair?
​
All female tap students need a very neat slick high bun with matching uniform hair garland. No wispy hairs. Please use gel and hairspray. Male tap students to make sure their hair is neatly styled.
Your student will need a Theory Book (Needed for all levels except Test 1- 3)
Students answer theory questions in their exam and are required to learn all theory words for their
level. All students undertaking exams must have a theory book to study and to take into the exam.
This book is signed by the examiner during the exam. This can be purchased on the ADV iclass
online store for $25 each and collected from ADV Reception.

(Prep and Grade 1 Age Students)
The Examination
• provides an opportunity for students to be introduced to the examination procedure in a relaxed and
familiar environment
• allows the teacher to demonstrate the work and assist the students in commencing all exercises in Tests
1 & 2
• provides the students with a medal and written report with positive and technical comments to assist with
ongoing training
• provides an opportunity for student’s to build self esteem and a sense of achievement
• gives the student’s family and teacher/s the opportunity to build confidence by congratulating the
students on how wonderful they are!

FAQ
Does my child have to go in on their own?
No, the students go in as a group with their fellow students.
​
How will the Examiner know which is my child?
The students have a number pinned to the front of their uniform. This number will correspond with the
student’s name and number on the entry form.

How do I know if my child is ready?
You child’s teacher is qualified to make that judgment. If a student has not reached a certain technical
level, has a learning disability or perhaps has not been learning very long, the student may be entered as
a participant.

What is the difference between entering an examination as a candidate as opposed to entering as
a participant?
An examination entrant will receive a grade - Pass or Unsuccessful based on their work together with
marks for each exercise. Please note that statistically more than 99.9% of candidates pass their
examinations. A participant receives a written report and a medallion without grades or marks for each
